The excellent olive mill that we use only tests your oil’s acidity level. This is a crucial quality indicator; to be classed as ‘extra virgin’ the oil must have an acidity level of 0.8% or lower. The lower the level the higher the quality. Ours ranges from 0.1% (highest possible quality) to 0.3% (still amazing).
However the mill doesn’t test the polyphenol levels. We would have to send a sample to a lab and the cost is £200. Expensive but not extortionate. But we would need to test every single pressing which would mean around 10 samples increasing the cost to £2,000. Out of the question!
