Green grass of Puglia

Green grass of Puglia

As well as lots of olive and almond trees, and various fruit trees (cherries have just ripened enough for picking), our land is sown with grasses for hay. With the first Spring sunshine it goes from dull and dormant brown mud to verdant green awash with poppies and wildflowers. It’s a haven for wildlife and the children love playing in the tall grasses. Then down it all comes and it’s left to dry, next it’s woven into lines and then the baler comes and churns out neat rectangles of golden hay. And finally we go back to brown when it’s ploughed and left for the next cycle of sowing and harvesting.
